The Feather or the Two-by-Four: Listen Now or Pay Later

The Feather or the Two-by-Four: Listen Now or Pay Later

There is something that happens right before a story changes. Before you decide to go back to school, start the business, end the relationship that stopped working, pick up the microphone. Before any of it.

There is a whisper.

We are never really standing still. We are always in motion, and new opportunities are always presenting themselves. Not all of them are meant for us. But some of them are exactly the growth we need, even if we could not have named it that way at the time.

That is when the feather arrives.

The Feather: A Gentle Nudge

But here is what happens when we keep saying no. Life delivers the same invitation again, this time without the gentleness. That is the two-by-four. The door that closes, the forced change, the wake-up call you cannot sleep through. It is not punishment. It is the same opportunity, finally demanding your attention at a cost that almost always includes time, and often includes more.

The feather is a gift. The two-by-four is a reminder that the gift was already offered. The only question is which one you are willing to wait for.

The How Comes After the Yes

I spent 20 years in the Army. One thing military service teaches you is that you do not wait for perfect conditions before you move. We actually used to joke around and say things were “generally free of error.” You train, you prepare, and when the moment comes, you execute with what you have. The clarity comes through the movement, not before it.

The feather works the same way. The path becomes visible as you walk it, not while you are standing still deciding whether to start.

A client of mine who had been through a major life transition described her own version of this moment. She got a quiet inkling to start sharing her story. She had no plan, no guarantee that anyone would listen. But she could not shake the feeling that she could not be the only one going through what she was going through. So she committed to the yes before she had the how, and started anyway.

That is the feather in action.

The how showed up after the yes. It always does.

This is the part nobody tells you. You do not get the roadmap first. You get the direction. The how comes after you move. The path builds itself under your feet, but only after you take the step.

Over years of working with podcasters, authors, coaches, and consultants, I have watched this play out consistently. The ones who build something that lasts are rarely the ones who had the clearest plan at the beginning. They are the ones who chose the feather. They said yes to the direction before they knew how it would unfold. And because they moved, the path revealed itself.

The feather is not asking you to be fearless. It is not asking you to have it figured out. It is asking you to be willing.

In Your Message Is the Business, I write about how the messages that matter most are the ones told with the most honesty. Not the polished version. The real one, told from inside the experience, that finds someone else in theirs. That is also the message that builds real influence. Not perfection. Authenticity.

You already have a direction. You have probably had it for a while.

Your Turn

Here is what I want you to do right now. Identify one thing that has been nudging you. Write it down. Do not plan it. Just name it.

Then ask yourself honestly: is this my feather?

The question has never been whether the nudge is real. It has been whether you are ready to trust it.

The world needs your authentic voice far more than it needs a perfectly planned one.

If that nudge has something to do with your message, your platform, or showing up more visibly for the people who need to hear from you, start with the Influence Scorecard. Free, two minutes, and it shows you exactly where you stand and what to focus on first.
