Last week I wrote about the publishing house mindset -- knowing what you are building and why every piece matters. (Catch it here if you missed it.) This week I want to talk about what happens when you know what you are building but keep waiting to feel ready to build it.
"Failure is how you learn to win."
Ari Rastegar said that on Episode 7 of Loving the Journey. He built a multi-billion dollar real estate portfolio starting with a $3,500 loan.
And he said something else that I keep coming back to: if your episode gets 60 views, do not look at the number as a failure. Imagine standing in a room with 60 people who showed up specifically to hear what you had to say. That is a room full of people you touched. The problem is almost never the platform. It is how we are measuring.
When I first started behind the microphone, just about every microphone I got behind stopped working. Radio studios at WNTW and ESPN in Richmond. Recording sessions at home. Guest spots on other people's shows. Something always went wrong with my equipment. (Here's an interview on ESPN Richmond - Look what happens at 8:42 during the recording! Crazy, huh?!)
At first I thought it was a fluke. Then it happened again and again and again. And every single time I was offered an opportunity to speak, I had a choice: wait until I could ensure everything would work perfectly or show up anyway.
I showed up. Not because I felt ready. Not because I felt confident. I showed up because the alternative -- waiting for perfect -- was just a quieter way of quitting.
Here is what I have learned from years of working with podcasters, authors, coaches, and consultants: most of them are not struggling because they lack expertise. They are stalling because the inner critic has convinced them that this version of their message is not the final version. So they wait. And while they wait, their audience waits too. And the clients who needed them yesterday find someone else.
Perfectionism dressed up as high standards is still avoidance. Full stop.
In Your Message Is the Business, I write about why celebrating incremental progress is not soft thinking. It is a business discipline.
Influence does not compound from a perfect launch. It compounds from consistent, imperfect presence. Every episode you publish, every email you send, every post you put out -- your future clients are watching that body of work build. They are deciding whether to trust you, and they are doing it based on what you do when you do not feel ready.
When you do not have a system connecting your content to real business results, you tend to look at all of that work and discount it. The content exists. The expertise is real. But without a structure activating it, it just feels like a pile instead of a platform.
Someone else's audience size. Their launch numbers. Their posting frequency. None of that is your baseline. Your baseline is where you were last month. Your progress is what you moved, said, built, or shipped since then.
When you are measuring wrong, everything feels like the end. Ari put it this way: when you think you are done, you have only reached 40% of your capacity. The barrier is not your talent. It is the story you are telling yourself about how ready you need to be.
Write down three things you have already created, said, or done in your business in the last 30 days -- no matter how small they feel. Then ask yourself: which one of these could be shared, extended, or activated right now to bring one more person into my world?
That is not starting over. That is the system working. You already have more than you think.
The work you have built is not waiting to be finished. It is waiting to be used.
Your work matters. Keep making an impact 💛
