Most people build their identity around one thing. Christian Hammer built his around everything.

He has ADHD. He holds a degree that combines computer science, architecture, and fine arts. He's a painter whose work is currently showing locally. He has been podcasting since 2008, back when there were only four business podcasts on the internet. He writes fiction, including an audio drama he's building into an immersive web experience. And he runs Ngentics AI, helping mid-market businesses compete without needing a single engineer on staff.

The standard career advice is always the same: niche down. Pick one thing. Specialize.

Christian Hammer didn't listen. And it turns out, he's been right all along.

The Story He Needed to Hear

When Christian started podcasting, it wasn't because he had a strategy. It was because he couldn't find his own story being told anywhere.

"I didn't go to an elite university. I paid my way through school. I was too easily distracted. But I knew a lot of people like me, multi-interested, excited by everything, never fully committed to one path."

The podcasting world was full of stories about people who always knew what they wanted to be. Christian wanted to hear from people who found their way through curiosity, failure, and a lot of wrong turns. So he created the platform himself.

The Stage Fright That Wasn't Fear

One of the most memorable moments in this conversation happens when Christian describes presenting at Nike before the Apple Watch was released. He was wearing a pre-production prototype with a heart rate monitor, he had severe stage fright, and right before walking on stage, he glanced at his wrist.

His heart rate was the same number he'd seen while flying down a mountain on his bike.

"I'm not afraid. This is adrenaline."

That single reframe changed how he walks into every uncomfortable room. It came, he says, from architecture school, where professors critique every line, every color, every choice without softening it. You either learn to separate yourself from the work, or you leave.

"It's not about me. It's about the work."

Permission to Fail

The message Christian brings to every multi-passionate person he meets is direct: you are not broken.

"Nobody became a great painter the day they were born. They were terrible at it for a very long time and eventually got good at it. We're going to try a lot of things and be bad at most of them. That's okay. Just do it. Enjoy it. Have fun with it. You get one chance."

Western society rewards specialists. It tells generalists to pick a lane. But Christian has spent his career showing that deep curiosity across many fields is its own kind of expertise. The person who can connect a painter's eye to an AI problem, or bring a radio DJ's instincts to a solo podcast, is not scattered. They're building something nobody else can build.

What to Take From This Episode

If you've ever felt like you had to specialize before you could be taken seriously, this episode is for you. Christian Hammer is proof that the mold was never built for everyone, and the people who break it tend to build something far more interesting on the other side.
