I spent more than twenty years as a military musician.
When you play in an ensemble, you learn something no textbook quite captures. You can have the best brass section in the building. The woodwinds can be flawless. Percussion locked in. And if nobody is playing in the same key, at the same tempo, toward the same phrase, it is not music. It is just organized noise.
That experience kept coming back to me when I was writing Chapter 14 of Your Message Is the Business.
Because I had a moment, somewhere in the middle of building all of this, where I looked at everything I had created and thought: I have all of it. The visibility is there. The story is clear. The offer exists. The values are real. So why does it not feel like it is working?
The answer was the same one I learned in the band room twenty years earlier. Having all the right parts is not the same as having them play together.
When I work with clients, we almost always start with the individual Tenets. Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Easy to Follow. Be the Solution. Be Paid with Purpose.
All five matter. But here is what took me longer to see in my own work: having all five is not the same as having them work together.
Each Tenet is an instrument. Individually, each one produces something real. But music is not five instruments playing separately in five different rooms. Music is what happens when they find the same rhythm.
Integration is not a bonus step. It is the step. It is where influence stops feeling like something you push and starts feeling like something that moves with you.
If you are an established creator who is showing up consistently, producing content with intention, and still waking up on Monday wondering where the clients are, this is likely what is happening.
Your Tenets are running in isolation. They are separate acts, not one show. Your visibility does not yet know your offer. Your story does not yet speak to the solution. Your values are real but they are not yet embedded in the experience of working with you.
None of it is wrong. It is just not yet connected. And a collection of right things that are not connected will not build a functioning business. Integration is what closes that gap.
When your beliefs, your content, your offers, and your values all point in the same direction, something shifts. Your efforts begin to compound rather than compete. Strengthen one Tenet and the others begin to lift because they are finally speaking to each other.
This is not about adding complexity to what you have already built. It is about allowing what you have already built to take root and function as one system. You are closer than you think. The work is not starting over. It is aligning what already exists.
This week, take three minutes and fill in three columns on paper or in a document.
Column One: Write down one belief you are ready to claim about your work, your value, or the people you serve.
Column Two: Name the Tenet that belief most directly strengthens. Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Easy to Follow. Be the Solution. Be Paid with Purpose.
Column Three: Choose one specific action you will complete by the end of this week that makes that belief visible in your business.
One belief. One Tenet. One action. That is where integration begins.
